Message from Joe McMahon, Radley Elementary Principal

  • Greetings Parents and Guardians of Radley Elementary Students!

I hope this note finds you and yours safe and in good health.  The Radley staff and I want to welcome you and your student(s) to our campus and look forward to hearing the sound of children's voices once again at Radley!

I have a few operational items to pass your way as the first day of school, Wednesday, August 26th approaches.

Our Board of Trustees has directed that all students are allowed back on campus on the first day of school unless parents have opted for a remote learning plan.  Radley classroom teachers will be contacting families of students in their class prior to the close of the day on Monday, August 24 to introduce themselves and share plans for the first day of school.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions district-wide, all on-site students will meet with their teacher outside on the morning of the 26th and will enter the building at 8:10 with their teacher.  You will be notified as to where to locate your child's teacher on school grounds outside that morning by your child's teacher.  Unfortunately, current restrictions for visitors to our building will not allow you to enter the building with your son/daughter that morning.  Public access to the building is currently limited to the front office area only.

Other than on the first day of school, students will be allowed to enter the school and go directly to their classroom beginning at 7:50 a.m.  We are asking for parent assistance in making sure that students are not dropped off at any district school or arrive at school via walking/biking prior to 7:50.  Supervision at all district schools will start at 7:50.  Breakfast will be available at the student's grade level hallway beginning at that time as well.   Radley students will enter and exit throughout each day at their homeroom's designated door.

During the day, your child will have either three (third grade) or two (fourth and fifth grades) recesses that weather permitting, will take place outside.  All recesses this year will involve just one grade level per recess, with each grade level divided into three cohorts of two homerooms each.  At all recesses, cohorts will share the same playground quadrant and will use their designated entry and exit doors.  Playground quadrants will be rotated weekly.

Both breakfast and lunch will be consumed in classrooms.  East Helena School Foods will provide bagged breakfast and/or lunch for those families opting to participate in the school meal program.  As always, students are welcome to bring their own lunch with them from home each day.

Music and library classes will happen for each homeroom but will be located in classrooms with the specialty teachers moving from classroom to classroom throughout the day.  On a limited basis, some PE classes will take place in the gym or outside where plenty of space for a single class of 24+ students is available.  Otherwise,  PE classes will also be held in classrooms.

All students will remain with their homeroom teacher for all core subjects each day  thus we will not be using a walk-to-read model of instruction for English Language Arts as has been the practice.

The end of the day release times will be as follows:  3rd grade - 3:12,  4th grade 3:15.,  5th grade 3:18.  There will no longer be shuttle buses running between district school sites.

Our staff is prepared to assist Radley students each day in staying safe.  All staff and students are required to wear a mask while on campus per Governor Bullock's recent order.  Daily temperature checks and wellness protocol questions will be administered to all students daily.  Social distancing, to the greatest extent possible wherever students are located, will be emphasized.  Hand sanitizing and washing will be points of emphasis.  The district's maintenance staff will be cleaning student bathrooms at midday as well as after school.

East Helena Public Schools has been in contact with the Lewis and Clark County Health Department and they have reviewed and approved our reopening plan.  Today's plans will always remain flexible as new information is forthcoming as to how to keep our students and staff safe during this pandemic.  Although it will look much different than what was in place prior to March 13th, we anxiously await the arrival of all 400+ Radley students and look forward to working with each of you as the year progresses.

Thank you for your time. Please contact your child's teacher or myself if we can answer other questions or be of assistance.

    Stay safe everybody.
